Located in the southeastern corner of the state, is Michigan's second oldest county.
Originally known as Frenchtown, Monroe was settled in the late 1700's and was the site of
a battle massacre during the War of 1812. Monroe's rich history is highlighted in a
Heritage Trail, the first one to be dedicated in the State of Michigan.
Famous Monroe County residents: General
Custer, who married a local girl and made his adult residence here, is well known for
his Indian fighting and eventual death at their hand. Vern Schneider, Pulitzer award
