Located in the southeastern corner of the state, is Michigan's second oldest county. Originally known as Frenchtown, Monroe was settled in the late 1700's and was the site of a battle massacre during the War of 1812. Monroe's rich history is highlighted in a Heritage Trail, the first one to be dedicated in the State of Michigan.

Famous Monroe County residents: General Custer, who married a local girl and made his adult residence here, is well known for his Indian fighting and eventual death at their hand. Vern Schneider, Pulitzer award winning author of Tea House of the August Moon; Kay Lanae Rae Rafko Wilson, Miss America 1988, and Bronco McKart, Junior Middleweight WBO World Champion.
