Washtenaw County
In 1809 fur traders established the first permanent trading post on the banks of the
Huron River, located on the Pottawatomie Trail (Michigan Avenue) at the present-day site
of Ypsilanti. When the University of Michigan was moved to Ann Arbor, and a railroad
connection was made between Detroit and Ann Arbor the area gained greater economic
stimulation and accessibility. The Huron River Valley originally maintained a
considerable Indian population, but because the area's Native Americans sided with the
British during both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the U.S. Government reacted
by forcing them to gradually give up their lands.
Today Ann Arbor Michigan maintains the excitement of a large metropolitan area, with the
pleasant relaxed atmosphere of a rural community. It has an abundance of resources as well
a better than average blending of festivals, concerts and museums.
The University of Michigan makes it's home in Ann Arbor.
Located within an hour of the Motor City, this high tech area is home to a large and
concentrated automotive research and supplier base. Washtenaw County has the
nation's 9th largest concentration of software companies. The book industry here is
#2 in the country behind New York, and is the nation's short run publishing capital...
home to three of the nation's fastest growing book sellers.
